I was recently introduced to the BBC World Challenge by the folks at Guayaki. This global competition recognizes social and environmentally conscious businesses that are "showing enterprise and innovation at a grassroots level." Guayaki Yerba Mate has been nominated in the challenge, so I wanted to give you a little background about the company and encourage you to go to the World Challenge website and vote.
Guayaki Yerba Mate is a line of beverages made from the traditional tea-like leaf, yerba mate, native to the South American rainforest. According to their website, "Guayakí Yerba Mate has the 'strength of coffee, the health benefits of tea, and the euphoria of chocolate' all in one beverage." When I read that, I couldn't resist accepting their offer to try it. They're sending me a sample to try, and I will share my thoughts with you once I get it.
In the meantime, voting for the World Challenge ends on November 11th, so I wanted to let you know about what Guayaki is doing in South America, and why I decided to vote for them.
Guayaki uses a market-driven restoration business model, which means they work to protect and restore the South American Atlantic Rainforest where farmers grow and harvest yerba mate in its natural habitat. The organic yerba mate is sustainably harvested from rainforest grown cultivations and reforestation projects, generating a renewable income stream, which enables these communities to improve their lives and restore their lands.
Guayaki’s stated mission is to steward and restore 200,000 acres of forest and create 1000 living wage jobs. You can read much more detail about the company on the Guayaki website.
Keep an eye out for my review of Guayaki Dark Roast Java Mate, which is described as "a coffee-alternative blend of yerba mate with roasted ramon nut." I chose it since I'm more of a coffee drinker than a tea drinker. I can't wait to try it and share my thoughts with you!
